"Skinny House" Ojai California New Construction - Green Home
Design concepts - simple,
clean, open to views, indoor/outdoor living
This design was influenced by the
"Glide House" by Michelle Hoffman. This terrific design is
a modular home which we tried to put on the site.
However, the beautiful mountain views are to the North and
changing the roof design of the Glide House created a bunch of
"engineering issues." So, instead of being limited
by the design, we decided to design and build a similar type of
home to be site built.
The lot is 100 feet wide and over
300 feet long - so a long skinny design works well providing a
large shaded area to the North side which works well for outdoor
living in Ojai's hot sunny climate.
The floor plan
included a garage (required by zoning regulations) which could
also be used as a studio space. The breezeway separated
the garage and the main living area of the home. This
simple design allows for passive solar design and lower
construction costs - also a site built home allows us to build
the house with a "slab on grade" type of construction so we can
have finished concrete floors with radiant heat.
Notice how the house
opens to the views to the North - allowing lots of Northern
light and shaded outdoor living area !
Notice how the south
side of the building is shaded and shields the house from the
hot Ojai sun !
